How to Tell If a Kinnow Is Fresh

How to Tell If a Kinnow Is Fresh

Choosing fresh fruit does not have to be complicated.

You do not need to be an expert farmer to make a reasonable judgement about the Kinnow you are buying. A few simple checks can tell you quite a lot.

Check the Weight

Pick up the Kinnow and compare it with another fruit of a similar size.

A Kinnow that feels reasonably heavy for its size may contain plenty of juice.

This is not a guarantee, but it is a useful everyday check when selecting citrus.

Look at the Skin

Fresh Kinnow can naturally have variations in skin color and texture.

Small marks do not automatically mean the fruit is bad.

What you want to avoid are obvious soft spots, severe bruising, mould or signs that the fruit has started to spoil.

Feel the Fruit

A fresh Kinnow should generally feel firm.

If the fruit feels excessively soft or mushy in several areas, it may not be in good condition.

Smell the Fruit

Fresh citrus usually has a pleasant, recognizable citrus fragrance.

If the fruit has an unusual fermented or unpleasant smell, it is better to choose another one.

Check the Whole Box

If you are buying Kinnow in a box, do not only check the fruit at the top.

Look through the box when possible.

One damaged fruit can affect the surrounding fruit if it is left unnoticed.

Freshness Is Also About Handling

Good fruit can lose quality if it is handled poorly after harvesting.

Sorting, transportation and storage all play a role in getting Kinnow from an orchard to a customer's kitchen.

The Warsi Farm focuses on farm-to-home delivery for Karachi customers, helping bring seasonal fruit directly to households.

Enjoy It Fresh

Once you have fresh Kinnow at home, keep it in a suitable cool and dry place and enjoy it during the season.

Sometimes choosing good fruit is simply about paying attention to the basics.
